There’s something special about the service we provide at J&D Ultracare. To date, we’re the only agency in the Hudson Valley dedicated entirely to pediatrics, and we make sure to provide our services in their homes. We know this is important because children feel safest in an environment that’s conformable to them as opposed to somewhere foreign like a hospital.
Even now, more and more research is coming out that re-inforce the importance of home visits from nurses. A report from the New York Times details a new study by James J. Heckman, a Nobel laureate economist from the University of Chicago, shows how strong the impact can be. The results showed that children who saw nurses in their homes were much healthier overall, had the ability to excel in school, and exhibited strong social and emotional skills.
Not only that, but parents also benefit from visits like this as well. For example, Aliah Arneson is a mother that is a part of the Nurse-Family Partnership, a program for first-time mothers on low income. These are mothers that need a lot of help, as they are typically young, unmarried, and have a medium income of $9,000. With the Nurse-Family Partnership, nurses can visit these mothers for support until their child is two years old.
Aliah learned a lot about taking care of her daughter from the frequent visits her nurse gave her. After a while, she learned to practice good habits like reading books to her regularly. She also learned safety tips like how to install a car seat the right way, how to hold her daughter when her ear hurt to help drain the fluid inside, and much more.
However, maybe the most important thing Aliah learned was how to confront her own anxieties about being a mother. Here’s a great quote from her on The New York Times:
“It gave me a lot of confidence,” said Ms. Arneson, 31, a hair stylist and a single mother in Kenosha, Wis. “I did not have my mom as a person who could do that for me, so my nurse was that person.”

There’s a ton of information there that we didn’t go into, like the fact that boys benefit from nursing more than girls do. It’s a really fascinating read and we hope you check it out! It makes us at J&D Ultracare proud of the nursing services we’ve been providing for over 30 years.
