1:1 Nursing for the Complex Needs in the Classroom 1:1 Nursing for the Complex Needs of the Classroom J&D Nurse to be active and compliant with agency standards of employment in addition to the particular school environment as APPLICABLE: Statewide Central Registry (SCR) clearance – preschool and transport cases Criminal Background Check that may include a Staff Exclusion List (SEL) Check Fingerprinting Professional Liability Insurance A Confidentiality Attestation Corporate Compliance/Codes of Conduct/Codes of Ethics PROFESSIONAL GUIDELINES: Provide Nursing services to your assigned student according to the medical plan of care to allow the student to meet their educational goals. Provide singed medical orders to the school nurse and/or Director of Nursing for medications and treatments during the school day. 1:1 Observation and assessment of your assigned student for transit, all therapies, special services, and classroom instruction – (In the event of a brief absence from your student you must communicate directly with the teacher and school nurse as needed.) Collaborate as needed for the individuated Education Plan (IEP) based on current medical status and/or any changes to clinical baseline. Abide by School/District policies and procedures including accurate and timely nursing documentation. Unless directed because of an emergency protocol, nursing interventions with other students in the classroom is prohibited. Follow the direction of the school nurse for initial orientation of the school health office and emergency operations plans. CLASSROOM GUIDELINES: Review with the teach the class agenda and curriculum both developmentally and functionally based for preschool through high school, as appropriate. Review with the teacher the class schedule and appropriate transition between activities/services for a conductive flow of the day. Develop with the teacher appropriate space for medical equipment, nursing activities in the classroom and advise on snacks/beverages. Most education programs are results oriented for the student to progress, nurses should be engaging with class lessons and assistive technology. Assist and follow direction of therapists/staff with adaptive equipment, cognitive behavior therapy, and promoting safe levels of independence. Nurses will promote the growth and development abilities of the student for individual and/or group leisure activities. Most classrooms have a safe lift policy of 2 person top bottom lift and for the student to never be left alone. Professional proper attire is expected for working in the school environment, and adult conversations should be kept to a minimum. Personal cell phone use is strictly prohibited when attending to the student for transit, classroom and nursing interventions.
